Zoo Research

The Centre for Research and Conservation (CRC), the research institute of the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp (RZSA) conducts applied and fundamental hypothesis-driven conservation research in various zoological disciplines. We aim to contribute to a better understanding of wild and zoo animal populations, and to support, develop and implement new and innovative tools for small population management and conservation breeding.

Breeding programmes

The science-based management of small populations of zoo animals lies at the heart of ex-situ conservation breeding, which has become the expertise and core business of many zoos and aquariums. Using scientific research as its primary tool, the CRC supports the captive breeding programmes coordinated by the RZSA.

Conservation projects

The research-based conservation projects of the RZSA in Brazil, DR Congo and Cameroon contribute to the protection of primates and their habitats by combining fundamental and applied ecological research with capacity building, community-based conservation and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources.
